English 11 - Quarter 2, Arc 1 Writing Task Perspectives of Freedom: The Language of Constructing Independence Write the Your Way Out Advocacy Project write clearly worded claim about waking up early that should be further developed, established or protected in our current society. Remember that you will need to support this claim with logical reasoning and evidence. You will write the speech or spoken word poem that incorporates your claim. Be sure to emulate rhetorical and literary devices from the mentor texts to enhance the power of your claim in your speech or poem. You will record and/or perform your final speech or poem using Flipgrid or a recording tool selected by your teacher. An effective speech: An effective spoken word poem: Identifies a type of freedom to be expanded and states a precise claim about it Develops the claim with valid reasons and relevant evidence from selected research Established clear, logical relationships among claims, reasons, and evidence Has a conclusion that follows logically from the body of the speech and makes a persuasive call to action Engages the audience by including a variety of rhetorical devices and techniques to support the claim Maintains a formal tone through appropriate word choices and the use of standard English Maintains audience interest with appropriate emphasis, volume and gestures Focuses on a type of freedom as the topic and conveys a clear message about that freedom Takes an ordinary experience and turns it into an extraordinary tale with an underlying or dominating message about that freedom demonstrates that you have a deep knowledge of the topic and are passionate about it Uses precise vocabulary that demonstrates understanding of synonyms and word choice Be convincing via the performance and the poet's conviction to "being in character" Utilizes literary techniques (such as rhyme, meter, figurative language, sound devices) to convey the claim, reasons and evidence Has a distinct line in the poem that is meant to capture the audience's attention.
