COUN 8250 Course Description: The COUN 8250 Course explores the processes of group development, member roles and dynamics, conflict resolution, and group leadership in order to understand the impact of groups on human behavior. Students learn to facilitate group counseling sessions.

COUN 8250 Course introduces students to the theoretical and practical aspects of group process and dynamics. Students will gain knowledge about group development, leadership styles, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, and other topics pertinent to working with groups. Students will also learn about the different types of groups that exist in society today including psychotherapy groups, self-help groups, workgroups, support groups, action groups, task-oriented groups, and project teams. Students will participate in experiential learning activities designed to prepare them for working with groups in a variety of settings.

COUN 8250 Course is an introduction to the study of groups and group behavior, with a focus on psychological and social processes that occur within groups. The COUN 8250 Course will cover topics such as the formation and dissolution of groups, group structure and cohesion, group dynamics, leadership, conflict resolution, decision making, and change in groups. Students will be expected to apply the concepts learned in COUN 8250 Course to a variety of settings such as families, workplaces, schools, therapy groups, and online communities.

* Group Process and Dynamics is a semester-long COUN 8250 Course that may be taken as a stand-alone class or as part of the required COUN 8250 Coursework for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. The grade for this class will contribute to the GPA for those students enrolled in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.

COUN 8250 Course focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of small group counseling. Emphasis is placed on developing basic group counseling skills such as: identifying group development stages, recognizing common leadership styles, facilitating group processes, managing group dynamics, and understanding various group counseling models and approaches. Students will have opportunities to enhance their understanding of self and others in groups through a variety of experiential learning opportunities.

3 lecture hours; 3 laboratory hours; 6 credits.

*COUN 8250 Course delivery modes for COUN 8250 may include a combination of face-to-face and hybrid meetings. Face-to-face meetings will require all students to attend at the same time in a designated classroom. Hybrid meetings are COUN 8250 Courses that meet face-to-face less often than weekly, but more than once per session, and utilize technology for the class meeting. A hybrid COUN 8250 Course may have some class sessions that are delivered via technology and others that are delivered face-to-face in the classroom. If a hybrid COUN 8250 Course includes an online component, students must have access to a personal computer or laptop with Microsoft Office software installed to complete required assignments.

Prerequisites: COUN 8210 or permission of instructor.

Students in the Group Process and Dynamics class, COUN 8250 will be engaged in both experiential and academic learning. For this reason, students should be able to express themselves orally, to think abstractly and critically, to read for understanding and integration, and to write clearly. Students should also be able to apply theories to practice. Therefore, instructors must have experience with experiential learning (i.e., the ability to facilitate processes that are designed to increase self-awareness), as well as a solid grounding in the theoretical foundations of group work.

*The following qualifications are currently required for all instructors of COUN 8250 Course: Master’s Degree in Counseling (or related field) with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in group counseling or group dynamics; a minimum of 3 years post-master’s experience facilitating groups; and professional licensure preferred but not required.

– Group Process and Dynamics is a graduate level COUN 8250 Course that examines the basic theoretical foundations of group dynamics, process and structure. The focus of this class is on the study of how groups work together in organizational settings to accomplish common goals. This class will cover a variety of topics related to group behavior, including: the formation and development of groups; the role of communication in groups; leadership in groups; decision making in groups; conflict management in groups; and, the dissolution of groups.

One credit is equal to approximately three hours of class time per week. Therefore, a five credit COUN 8250 Course like COUN 8250 – Group Process and Dynamics would require approximately fifteen hours of class time per week.

1. Group Presentation (40%)

Students will work in groups of four to prepare a presentation on one of the following topics related to group process and dynamics:

• Conflict resolution in groups

• Decision-making in groups

• Group facilitation techniques

• Leading effective meetings

• Developing group cohesion

Each student in the group will be required to participate in the presentation and will be graded on their individual contribution. The presentation should be 15-20 minutes in length and include a PowerPoint component. Students will be graded on their ability to effectively communicate their chosen topic to the class, as well as their ability to apply COUN 8250 Course concepts to real-world situations.

2. Final Paper (60%)

Students will write a final paper on a topic related to group process and dynamics of their choice. Possible topics for the paper could include, but are not limited to: team building, problem solving in groups, leadership styles and their impact on group dynamics, or developing group cohesion. The paper should be 10-12 pages in length (double-spaced, 12 point font) and must include at least five scholarly sources in addition to the COUN 8250 Course textbook.

It is important to remember that it is possible to study these dynamics without understanding them. The purpose of this exercise is to see if you can use your understanding of group dynamics to explain some behaviours that have been observed in groups. The data are based on an experiment described in J. S. Valle, ‘Interpersonal attraction as a function of self-reported behavioural similarity’, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1968, 9, pp. 175-180. Participants were asked to rate themselves on 16 traits using a 5-point scale ranging from very low to very high. For example, one item was ‘I am the life and soul of the party’. The participants were then placed in small groups (4–6 people) so that they could discuss their ratings with each other. Each group had a moderator who encouraged discussion but did not take part in it. At the end of the discussion, each participant again rated themselves on each trait. The difference between the first and second ratings was used as a measure of change in attitude. Students will gain an understanding of the various phases of group development, communication patterns within groups, leadership styles, member roles and conflict resolution strategies. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a practicum experience.

COUN 8250 Course offers a review of the major theories, research, and applications of group counseling. COUN 8250 Course introduces students to an in depth understanding of group processes and dynamics by focusing on how groups function in various cultural contexts and situations across the globe. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the impact of different cultural values and beliefs on group functioning as well as explore their own personal attitudes and biases regarding diversity within groups. Theories and research related to conflict resolution, leadership, decision making, and other topics relevant to group functioning will also be covered in COUN 8250 Course.

I felt that the personal history cards activity was very beneficial. I enjoyed learning about my classmates’ backgrounds and hearing their stories.
