Directions: Answer each of the following 20 questions below in your own words and then submit your completed assignment to the Submitted Assignment link above. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at cindy@cindybennett.net

1) Describe the nature of addiction and its impact on society in general as well as individuals, families, and groups. (100-150 words)

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain—they change its structure and how it works. These brain changes can be long-lasting, and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs. Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior. When left untreated, it often leads to a progressive deterioration of mental and physical health. In addition to causing an individual’s physical and mental health to deteriorate, addiction also takes a toll on families and relationships, can lead to financial instability, and places a strain on communities. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “addiction is a preventable, chronic disease that can be managed effectively.” With treatment and support, people with addiction can recover and lead productive lives.

2) Identify three major psychological theories of addiction and discuss their main tenets. (100-150 words)

The three major psychological theories of addiction are the cognitive-behavioral theory, the psychodynamic theory, and the biopsychosocial model. The cognitive-behavioral theory posits that addiction is learned through classical conditioning; that is, people learn to associate certain cues with drug use, which then leads to drug craving and use. The psychodynamic theory views addiction as a result of unresolved childhood issues, such as trauma or abuse. The biopsychosocial model takes into account both biological and psychological factors, as well as social factors, in explaining addiction. This model views addiction as a result of an interaction between these three factors.

3) Discuss how family systems theory can be used to understand addictive disorders from a family perspective.(100-150 words)

Family systems theory posits that families are organized around certain rules and roles that help maintain balance within the family system. This theory can be used to understand addictive disorders from a family perspective by looking at how the family system is disrupted by addiction. For example, addiction can cause role reversal within the family, where the addict becomes the parent and the parent becomes the child. This role reversal can lead to further chaos and disruption within the family system. In addition, addiction can cause families to develop enabling behaviors that allow the addict to continue using drugs or alcohol without consequence. Enabling behaviors can include making excuses for the addict’s behavior, covering up for them, or taking on their responsibilities.

4) Discuss how group therapy can be used to treat addictive disorders.(100-150 words)

Group therapy is an effective treatment for addictive disorders because it allows people with similar experiences to share their stories and provide support for one another. Group therapy also provides an opportunity for people to learn new coping skills and strategies for dealing with difficult situations. In addition, group therapy can help people with addictive disorders develop a sense of accountability and responsibility for their recovery.

COUN 8202 Week 2 DQ 1 (20 Questions)

1. What is addiction?

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain—they change its structure and how it works. These changes can be long-lasting, and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs.

2. What are the different types of addiction?

There are many different types of addiction, including but not limited to: alcohol addiction, drug addiction, gambling addiction, food addiction, sex addiction, and shopping addiction.

3. What are the causes of addiction?

The causes of addiction are complex and vary from person to person. There is no single cause of addiction. Rather, it is caused by a combination of factors, including biological factors (e.g., genes), psychological factors (e.g., stress), and social factors (e.g., peer pressure).

4. What are the symptoms of addiction?

The symptoms of addiction vary depending on the type of addiction, but they typically include compulsive behaviors, cravings, and tolerance.

Addiction is diagnosed based on a variety of criteria, including but not limited to: persistent use despite negative consequences, failure to meet important obligations, continued use despite interpersonal or social problems caused by use, and craving.

7. How is addiction treated?

The treatment of addiction typically includes a combination of medication (e.g., for withdrawal symptoms) and behavioral therapy (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy). There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating addiction, and treatment should be tailored to the individual’s needs. In some cases, residential or inpatient treatment may be necessary. 8 .What are the risks of untreated addiction?

Please read the case scenario below and then answer the questions in complete sentences. Be sure to number your answers. Please review the posting requirements before you begin.

Case Scenario: Jessie has been coming to your weekly group therapy sessions for the past four months. She is a bright, articulate 38-year-old woman who is currently unemployed and lives in an apartment with her boyfriend, Joe. Jessie grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and moved to New York City after college. She has struggled with alcohol abuse for many years, but things really spiraled out of control two years ago when she was laid off from her job as a marketing manager for a major corporation. Since that time she has had several short-term jobs and has been arrested three times for public intoxication. As you get to know Jessie better, you learn that her parents were very critical of her while she was growing up and that she began drinking alcohol at age 16 to cope with their constant criticism. You also learn that Jessie has had several previous relationships with men who were physically abusive toward her. In fact, she currently has bruises on her arms from an altercation with Joe last week during which he accused her of flirting with another man at a party they attended together.

1) How might Jessie’s childhood experiences contribute to her current struggles?
2) What are some possible warning signs that Jessie’s alcohol abuse is progressing?
3) What are some possible consequences of continued alcohol abuse for Jessie?
4) What treatment options might be appropriate for Jessie at this time?
5) What are some possible challenges you might encounter while working with Jessie?

COUN 8202 Week 4 Outline

– 2016 Spring 1

Week 4: Psychopharmacological Approaches to Treatment

Due this week:

• COUN 8202 Course Feedback Form (posted in Announcements)

• Discussion Question 2 – Psychopharmacological Treatment of Substance Abuse Disorders. Please post your initial discussion question by midnight on Wednesday, January 20. Your initial discussion posting should be at least 250 words and must incorporate at least one COUN 8202 Course concept covered in this week’s readings. Once you have posted your initial discussion question, you will need to reply to at least two other students’ initial discussions throughout the week by midnight on Sunday, January 24. These replies should be a minimum of 100 words each and must also incorporate COUN 8202 Course concepts from this week’s readings. Each student is required to post one initial discussion and reply to two other students’ initial discussions by midnight on Sunday, January 24.

• Assignment 2 – Psychopharmacological Treatment of Substance Abuse Disorders (due Sunday, January 24). For Assignment 2, you will develop a case formulation for your chosen client using at least one psychopharmacological approach to treatment discussed in the weekly readings or lecture content. You will use this case formulation as a basis for developing your Treatment Plan for Assignment 3. The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to apply psychopharmacological assessment tools and principles that can be used when developing an appropriate treatment plan for clients with substance abuse disorders. It is important that you familiarize yourself with these assessment tools prior to starting work on this assignment so that you can assess your client appropriately and make recommendations based on the results of your assessment (please see “Additional Resources” below). The first step in completing Assignment 2 is to choose a client from either Case Study #1 or Case Study #2 located under Content > Week 1 > Assignments (the client may not have substance abuse issues). Once you have chosen a client, write up an evaluation of your chosen client using all appropriate information gathered during the evaluation process including clinical interview questions and test results (if available). This evaluation should include any significant personality characteristics, psychopathology symptoms and diagnoses (according to the DSM-V), personal history and family history which may be relevant to developing a treatment plan for substance abuse disorders; however, if you believe additional testing is needed before starting treatment with your chosen client (e.g., lab tests), please note these requests in your evaluation report but do not conduct them until after completing Assignment 3 and obtaining permission from Dr. McDonald first . If needed, please refer back to Appendix A located under Content > Week 1 > Readings for suggested interview questions that can be used during individual therapy sessions with clients who have substance abuse disorders or refer back to Table 5-1 in Chapter 5 located under Content > Week 1 > Readings for suggested diagnostic criteria according to the DSM-V . After conducting a thorough evaluation of your chosen client, write up a case formulation report discussing how your chosen psychopharmacological approach would help address specific signs/symptoms associated with each diagnosis listed in your evaluation report as well as any significant personality characteristics noted during the evaluation process. For example, if you were going to use CBT with a person diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder per DSM-V guidelines discussed above then perhaps consider how CBT might address specific “cognitive distortions” associated with alcohol abuse such as: thinking that drinking alcohol improves my mood or makes me feel better when it really doesn’t; using alcohol as a way of coping with difficult emotions such as anxiety or depression instead of addressing them directly; feeling like I need alcohol more than I actually do; etc.; however, feel free to discuss whatever goals/objectives you think would most benefit your client based on their unique circumstances including those not listed here . Be sure that there are concrete goals/objectives included in this section which are achievable within the time frame listed below . Finally, write up an annotated bibliography discussing three references related specifically to this psychopharmacological approach being considered along with why each reference was selected given its relevance/usefulness for treating substance abuse disorders in general or for treating specific signs/symptoms associated with alcoholism , prescription drug addiction , or marijuana addiction . Be sure that all references are formatted according APA style requirements discussed under Content > Resources > Reference & Citation Help @Your Library! All references selected must come from peer reviewed journal articles published within the last 10 years – NO TEXTBOOKS OR OTHER TYPES OF REFERENCES ALLOWED! The only exception is when citing information regarding historical perspectives related specifically to this psychopharmacological approach being considered. If historical perspectives are cited then they must come from textbooks written by reputable scholars within their field(s) of expertise OR peer reviewed journal articles which focus exclusively on historical perspectives related specifically to this psychopharmacological approach being considered – no exceptions allowed! Please note that only ONE textbook citation will be allowed as part of this annotated bibliography . Finally, please refer back again specifically t o Table 5-1 found under Content > Week 1 > Readings discussing potential diagnosis codes based on clinical symptoms listed according DSM-V guidelines before beginning work on this assignment because some potentially useful diagnosis codes may have changed since previous versions of the DSM (e.g., PTSD = 309.81) ! In summary:

Assignment 2 Requirements:

• All written components must follow proper APA style requirements discussed under Content > Resources > Reference & Citation Help @Your Library!

• Evaluation Report (a minimum of 500 words): Include full names and basic demographics information about both yourself and your chosen client along with interview questions used during both individual therapy sessions so that Dr. McDonald can grade based on what actually happened during each session rather than what “should” happen given therapy role plays conducted by other students earlier in the semester or given what happens during therapy role plays conducted by students currently enrolled in COUN 8001 – Techniques & Procedures COUN 8202 Coursework . You are not required nor expected §§tovide full identifying information about yourself or information relating specifically tp individual therapy clients seen previously ; however , y ou should provide enough basic identifying information about both yourself (e.g., gender identity, age range) and individual clients seen previously so t hat Dr McDonald can give credit where credit is due while protecting confidentiality according t o APA ethical standards discussed earlier i n th e semester ! Also include clinical interview questions used during both individual therapy sessions along w ith any test results if available followed by an analysis linking all acquired data gathered together through th e ev aluation process w ith specific psychological theories covered earlier i n th e semester including major characteristics associated w ith different types o f personality disorders just like Dr McDonald did i n th e l ast class session where he created hypothetical cases based off real life clients se en i n previous semesters ! Finally , include any significant personality characteristics , psychopathology symptoms , diagnosis codes , personal history , family history , etc., identified during th e ev aluation process ! Be sure t o discuss how any psychoactive substances being abused may influence symptom presentation though direct ingestion via smoking cigarettes containing nicotine or inhaling marijuana smoke m ay lead t o different symptoms depending upon how much is consumed over time ! Be s ure t o refer back especially t o Table 5-1 located under Content > Week 1 & gt; Readings before beginning work because some potentially useful diagnosis codes may hav e changed since previous versions o f th e DSM !

COUN 8202 Week 4 Assignment Question (20 Questions)

**COUN 8202 Course Instructor: Dr. Mary Ann Rothert, LCSW-C, LCADC-C**

**Instructions:** Please answer all questions below thoroughly and in your own words. Be sure to submit your answers in this document as a Word attachment to the Submissions Area by the end of Day 7 of Week 4. Also, please be sure to number each of your responses to correspond with the question number.

1. What are three primary goals identified in ASAM’s definition of recovery? How does ASAM define “abstinence”? How does ASAM define “harm reduction”?

The three primary goals identified in ASAM’s definition of recovery are: 1) Health – physical and mental; 2) Home – a stable and safe place to live; and 3) Purpose – meaningful daily activities, including a job or school, hobbies, volunteering, and so on. abstinence is defined as refraining from using mood-altering substances; harm reduction is defined as reducing the negative consequences of drug use while maintaining or reducing drug use.

2. ASAM identifies four dimensions along which an individual’s level of care needs are assessed. What are they? Which one is most important? Why?

The four dimensions along which an individual’s level of care needs are assessed are: 1) Acuity/severity of use; 2) Biopsychosocial conditions and complications; 3) Readiness to change; and 4) Relapse/continued use risks. Acuity/severity of use is most important because it assesses the immediate risks posed by an individual’s drug use.

COUN 8202 Week 4 Discussion 1 (20 Questions)

Question 1: What is the disease model of addiction? How did this model come to be and what are its limitations?

The disease model of addiction posits that addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite negative consequences. This model suggests that addiction is a brain disease because it is caused by changes in brain structure and function. The disease model of addiction has its roots in the medical model of mental illness, which suggests that mental illnesses are diseases that need to be treated with medical interventions. The limitations of the disease model of addiction include its reductionistic view of addiction as a brain disease, its lack of consideration for social and environmental factors that contribute to addiction, and its emphasis on medical treatment over other forms of treatment.

1) A 42-year-old Caucasian woman, Jillian Loomis, is scheduled for her first individual counseling session with you after having completed her intake paperwork and being screened over the telephone. She appears very anxious when she walks into your office and is wringing her hands together nervously. After introducing yourself and shaking her hand, you invite her to have a seat in your comfortable chair. She sits down rather rigidly with her back straight as an arrow; however, she does appear to be relaxing slightly during your conversation as time goes on. She tells you that she has been trying to quit smoking cigarettes since she was diagnosed with COPD three years ago but has not been successful. She reports that she usually smokes about 10 cigarettes per day but can go as high as 25 cigarettes per day if she’s under a lot of stress or has had a bad day at work. Her voice is slightly raspy from years of smoking; however, other than that there are no visible signs that this is a long-term smoker. You learn from her intake paperwork that her mother died from lung cancer when Jillian was just 17 years old, so this may contribute to her anxiety about quitting smoking and why she has been unsuccessful in the past. During your conversation with Jillian, she mentions several times how much worry this is causing her family because they all want her to quit smoking before it kills her like it killed her mother. You notice that while talking about this topic, Jillian appears to be very emotional and tearful; however, she quickly regains control over herself and continues talking about how hard it is for her to quit smoking cigarettes because they help calm her nerves when she feels stressed out or anxious about something. She also tells you that smoking cigarettes helps take the edge off when she’s had a bad day or gotten into an argument with someone at work or home; however, she says that lately it seems like smoking isn’t even helping relieve these negative feelings anymore like it used to in the past. When asked what specifically brings her into counseling today, Jillian tells you that she really wants to quit smoking cigarettes but doesn’t know how to do it on her own; therefore, she wants some help in learning how to quit smoking permanently so she can improve her health and feel better about herself overall.

a) What motivation theories best explain Jillian’s desire to quit smoking? Please provide specific examples from the case study above (i.e., reference specific content in the case study) when providing your answer(s). (2 points)

b) Would it be beneficial for Jillian to participate in group therapy? Why or why not? Please provide specific examples from the case study above (i.e., reference specific content in the case study) when providing your answer(s). (2 points)

c) List two reasons why Jillian may have been unsuccessful in quitting smoking cigarettes in the past despite wanting to do so very badly? Please provide specific examples from the case study above (i.e., reference specific content in the case study) when providing your answer(s). (2 points)

COUN 8202 Week 6 Assignment (20 Questions)

COUN 8202 Course Instructor: Dr. Wayne B. Jonas, PhD

1. What is an example of a maladaptive coping mechanism that can lead to addiction?

An example of a maladaptive coping mechanism that can lead to addiction is avoidance. Avoidance can take many forms, such as avoiding difficult emotions, situations, or people. When someone uses avoidance as a way to cope with stress, they may turn to substances or activities that numb or distract them from their problems. This can lead to addiction if the person cannot control their use of the substance or activity.

2. What is an example of an adaptive coping mechanism that can help prevent addiction?

An example of an adaptive coping mechanism that can help prevent addiction is problem-solving. When people use problem-solving to cope with stress, they identify the source of their stress and come up with a plan to address it. This can help prevent addiction because it gives people a constructive way to deal with their problems instead of numbing them with substances or activities.

3. What are some risk factors for developing an addiction?

There are many risk factors for developing an addiction, including genetic predisposition, mental health disorders, trauma, and poverty. People who have a family history of addiction are more likely to develop an addiction themselves. Mental health disorders can increase the risk of addiction by causing distress and impairing judgment. Trauma can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can in turn lead to self-medicating with drugs or alcohol. Poverty can increase the risk of addiction by leading to stress and desperation, which can make people more likely to turn to substances or activities that numb or distract them from their problems.

4. What are some protective factors against developing an addiction?

There are many protective factors against developing an addiction, including positive family relationships, supportive friends, and a sense of community belonging. People who have positive family relationships and supportive friends are more likely to have positive coping mechanisms and social support systems in place, which can help prevent addiction. A sense of community belonging can provide meaning and purpose in life, which can also help prevent addiction.

5. What is the difference between tolerance and withdrawal?

Tolerance is when a person needs increasingly larger amounts of a substance or activity to get the same effect. Withdrawal is when a person experiences negative symptoms when they stop using a substance or activity after using it regularly. Tolerance can lead to withdrawal if a person suddenly stops using the substance or activity they are tolerant to. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions, depending on the substance or activity involved.

All students will be asked to participate in weekly discussions as a part of this class. Each discussion has three parts: an initial post due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m., Minnesota time; two peer responses due by Thursday at 11:59 p.m., Minnesota time; and a final reflection due on Friday at 11:59 p.m., Minnesota time. Please note that you will be expected to complete all three parts of the discussion each week in order to earn participation points for that week’s discussion topic. If you have questions about these discussions or need help getting started with your initial post, please contact your instructor or a student success coach for assistance.

When responding to your classmates’ initial posts each week during the discussion period (Thursday-Friday), you should provide comments that build upon or reflect their posts—not simply repeat what they already said or agree with them outright without adding anything new to the conversation. (If you wish to disagree with a classmate’s perspective on a given topic after considering his or her input carefully and critically examining it, feel free to do so—just be respectful.) In addition to making comments on each other’s ideas during the discussion period (Thursday-Friday), you should also ask follow-up questions whenever you think it would be beneficial or informative to do so (at any point during the entire discussion period). For example: What do you mean when you say X? How did you come up with Y? What is an example of Z? Your questions can ask for clarification of something mentioned in someone else’s post or they can ask someone else to expand upon an idea he or she introduced in a previous post. Also feel free to pose questions directly to your instructor at any time if something related to the COUN 8202 Course material is unclear or if you need further guidance regarding the discussion topic for any given week of class. The goal here is for everyone—students and instructor—to learn from one another throughout this learning community experience! It is also worth noting that even if no one responds directly to something specific that you say during a given week’s discussion period (Thursday-Friday), this does not necessarily mean that your input was not valuable and appreciated by your classmates and instructor! In fact, sometimes simply posing thought-provoking questions can generate valuable answers from others who are thinking about similar things but who may not have felt confident enough yet themselves to voice these ideas out loud! So don’t be shy! Don’t hesitate! Join in on the conversation however feels most comfortable for you! We all look forward to learning with and from each other throughout COUN 8202 Course! =)

Week 6 Discussion 2: Strategies for Managing Depression in Substance Use Disorder Treatment

What are some specific depression management strategies for a client who is in substance abuse treatment? What are the benefits and disadvantages of each strategy? Please be sure to support your position with research from scholarly sources. Please address at least one peer-reviewed journal article in this discussion. You can also address any of the required readings for this week as well as the suggested readings. Finally, please remember to apply at least one theory from COUN 8202 Course to the discussion topics by using terminology from a theory or theories from COUN 8202 Course. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length and use at least three peer-reviewed references, formatted according to APA guidelines. Respond to two other learners’ posts by Day 7. All posts must be substantial and use APA citations when referencing information from scholarly sources. For substantial participation, you must post an initial discussion thread by Tuesday and reply to two other learner’s posts by Sunday; all of these postings must meet the required criteria indicated above. Substantial participation includes sufficient depth and breadth of content that adds value to the learning community experience. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly resources as appropriate. Refer to the Essential Components of APA Style Scavenger Hunt document for guidance on how to locate information about the APA style rules discussed in COUN 8202 Course. As you complete each scavenger hunt question, copy/paste the answer into a word processing document for future reference when you write your discussions, assignments, and final paper for COUN 8202 Course.(Note: Please refer back to Unit 2 Discussion 1 threads where we discussed how addiction may cause or result in depression.) How do we manage depression with clients who have substance abuse issues? Do we treat them differently than someone who doesn’t have an addiction? If so…how do we treat them differently? Do you think I am right? Why or why not? There are no wrong answers…I would like everyone’s opinion…this will help us when we have clients come into our office!(The part that I highlighted is my opinion.) For example: A client comes into our office stating he/she feels depressed since losing his job last month because he was caught drinking alcohol on the job . . . he then got fired because his boss said he had an alcohol problem….his wife left him last week taking their child with her due to his drinking habits…he has been drinking more now than ever before…what do you think is going on here???(I think that it may be too late for this person right now due to all that has occurred in his life recently.) This may be a complicated case but what are your thoughts??? COUN 8202 Week 8 Assignment Question (20 Questions)

Instructions: Please read all instructions carefully before beginning the exam.

1. This is an open-book, take home examination. You may use your text and any other materials you deem necessary to complete this examination; however, you are not allowed to consult with anyone during the examination process except the instructor. If you have questions, please email your instructor.

2. This examination must be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font and double-spaced. Please number each question as you answer it. In addition, please include a title page with the following information: your name, the COUN 8202 Course number and title, my name, and the date you are submitting the exam.

3. Please submit your completed examination to me by uploading the document into the Assignment Dropbox by 11:59 p.m., Eastern Standard Time on Sunday of Week 8 (March 15). Late submissions will not be accepted without prior approval from me and will result in a grade of zero for this assignment.

4. This is a closed book examination worth 100 points. Each question is worth 5 points for a total of 20 questions worth 100 points possible. Please answer each question thoroughly using complete sentences and supporting your responses with specific examples where appropriate from your readings and experience in COUN 8202 Course as well as other professional literature or experiences you may have had related to substance abuse counseling/treatment or mental health counseling/treatment during your academic career or professional work experience in the human services field since completing your undergraduate degree(s).

5. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic grade of zero for this assignment as well as disciplinary action being taken through Liberty University’s Honor Code Office per LU Policy Number 2200 (Student Rights & Responsibilities). Be sure to cite sources when appropriate throughout this exam as well as on a reference page at the end of the exam if you use outside sources in addition to our required texts for COUN 8202 Course when answering any of these questions (i.e., indicate author last name[s] and date of publication within parentheses immediately following each sentence that contains information that was quoted or paraphrased from an outside source). Any time you refer to specific information from our required texts for COUN 8202 Course or incorporate direct quotes from these texts into your responses to any of these questions, also be sure to indicate author last name[s] and date of publication within parentheses immediately following each sentence containing this information as well (i.e., Putnam [2016] stated…). For example, if you were referring to Chapter 4 of Putnam’s 2016 text on pages 105 – 106 discussing stages 2 – 4 of his relational-cultural theory (R-C theory) of human development which include developing compassion for self; developing compassion for others; developing mutuality or reciprocity; creating one’s own meaning; exploring possibilities for growth; developing trust in self, others, and relationships; practicing balance between separateness and connectedness; valuing oneself regardless of achievement; valuing others regardless of their appearance or achievements; acknowledging pain while experiencing joy; encountering one’s shadow side while honoring one’s light side; accepting imperfection rather than striving for perfectionism; seeking truth over certainty, etc., then at the end of each sentence that contains specific information related to these stages 2 – 4 discussed on pages 105 – 106 in Chapter 4 of Putnam’s 2016 text, you would put Putnam [2016], 105 – 106 within parentheses immediately following that sentence (or at least at the end of that paragraph if multiple sentences within that paragraph contain specific information related to these stages 2 – 4 discussed on pages 105 – 106). The same would apply if referring specifically to any other sections within our required texts throughout this exam as well such as Chapter 7 on pages 193 – 194 discussing Putnam’s “layers model” describing how trauma affects different layers within individuals which include physical changes such as decreased sleep quality and frequency, impaired immune system functioning leading to more illness due to stress hormone production during trauma exposure which suppresses immune function making survivors more susceptible not only to physical illness but also emotional problems such COUN 8202 Week 10 Discussion 2 (20 Questions)

*Week 10 Discussion (20 Questions) for COUN 8202 – Theories, Treatment, and Case Management of Addiction (5 credits) (COUN 8202)* *1. Using the stages of change model, identify one specific goal you would like to set for yourself and discuss what stage you are in.* I would like to set a goal to exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 days a week. I am currently in the pre-contemplation stage as I have not been exercising on a regular basis. 2. Describe a time when you had to make an important decision related to your personal well-being. What did you do? How did you feel about your decision? The most recent important decision I made related to my personal well-being was deciding whether or not to have surgery to remove a mass on my thyroid. I met with my doctor and several other specialists to get their opinions and then ultimately decided to have the surgery. I felt good about my decision as it was made with the help of professionals whose opinions I trust. 3. Discuss a time when you had difficulty making a decision. What made the decision difficult? How did you eventually make your decision? A couple of years ago, I had difficulty deciding whether or not to move out of state for a new job opportunity. I eventually made the decision to stay in my current state after much deliberation. What made the decision difficult was that the job opportunity was very appealing and it would have meant moving closer to family. 4. Explain how you usually go about making decisions. Do you tend to be more spontaneous or do you like to plan everything out in advance? I usually go about making decisions by first considering all of my options and then weighing the pros and cons of each option before making a final decision. I tend to be more spontaneous when it comes to smaller decisions, but I like to plan everything out in advance when it comes to bigger decisions. 5. Discuss a time when you had to deal with an unexpected change in your life. How did you deal with the change? How did you feel about it? The most recent unexpected change in my life was losing my job due to budget cuts. I dealt with the change by immediately beginning to look for another job and applying for unemployment benefits. I felt very stressed about the situation at first, but eventually found another job and am now doing well. 6. Explain how you usually deal with change. Do you like changes or do you prefer things to stay the same? I usually deal with change by first feeling overwhelmed and then slowly adjusting to the new situation. I don’t necessarily like changes, but I have learned that they are inevitable and often for the best. 7

Methods of Instruction

COUN 8202 Course will utilize a variety of instructional methods to accomplish its objectives. These may include but are not limited to: lecture/presentation; discussion; written assignments; oral presentations; videos; Internet resources; field experience activities; demonstrations and simulations; self-assessments such as quizzes and tests designed to reinforce learning concepts. Students should expect weekly interaction with the instructor via discussion boards about reading assignments and current topics related to addiction counseling theories and treatment modalities as well as case management issues associated with clients in various stages of recovery from addiction disorders. Students will be required to submit written responses based on reading assignments as well as case vignettes relating addiction treatment theories and treatment plans to real life cases utilizing a systems perspective in order to provide adequate care across the lifespan of addicted clients who are returning home after incarceration in prison or jail facilities. In addition each student will be required to choose a specific theory based on interest or professional preparation and write an research paper addressing that theory’s application in treating specific groups including women struggling with addiction disorders during pregnancy in addition to clients involved in substance abuse courts in order to better understand how this concept may contribute significantly toward effective treatment strategies that promote long term recovery outcomes within this population group who struggle daily with maintaining sobriety while working at jobs and raising families simultaneously without relapsing back into drug abuse behaviors thereby returning again into criminal justice facilities because of relapse prevention failures on their part when faced with challenging life events and stressors that can easily trigger relapse behaviors due to previously learned coping mechanisms that no longer support recovery from drug abuse problems but instead promote continued use patterns which result in further criminal activity followed by reentry into jails or prisons which therefore creates an ongoing cycle of recidivism leading back into our nation’s correctional facilities rather than rehabilitation programs which provide more appropriate interventions for recovering addicts working toward successful outcomes upon release from prison or jail environments upon completion of their sentence(s). As this is an online COUN 8202 Course you will need access to a computer with Internet access at minimum of 56Kbps modem speed or greater along with e mail capability which enables you receive COUN 8202 Week 11 Assignment Question (20 Questions)

This is a case-based assignment, using your own addiction case to answer the following questions. The purpose of this assignment is for you to critically apply the theory and practice that you have learned in COUN 8202 Course by using them on a real-life problem. For example, if you are treating someone with an alcohol use disorder, you can apply what you learned about the 12 steps to their individual case. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers – this is not a test. The key is to apply the concepts in a thoughtful way that makes sense given what you have learned in class and through your readings. Please type up your responses to each question below (use 1” margins and 12 pt font). Your paper should be between 10-12 pages (not counting title page, reference page, or appendixes). You must use at least 3 scholarly sources beyond your textbook to support your ideas. Be sure to cite any sources used throughout your paper and include references on a separate reference page at the end of your document. Remember – plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic zero for this assignment!

Identify 3 specific behaviors or symptoms that make up your patient’s diagnosis from the DSM-V. What treatment models/approaches would be most appropriate for treating each of these behaviors/symptoms? Explain why you chose each one. What specific interventions would you use within each model/approach? Again, explain why you selected each one as part of your treatment plan. How does trauma fit into the picture? Have they experienced any trauma(s) prior to developing an addiction? Do they experience any trauma related to their addiction now? If so, how will it be addressed as part of their treatment? Using one of the theories we have covered in class (e.g., CBT), describe how you would approach therapy with this patient (i.e., what specific techniques would you use?). What diagnostic tools did you use during intake and assessment? Why did you choose those specific tools? When conducting group therapy sessions, what types of groups would work best for this patient (i.e., process groups, skills training groups)? Why did you choose those types of groups as part of their care? Describe how family/significant others will be involved in treatment (e.g., family sessions). Have they been involved previously in their addiction recovery efforts (i.e., Al-Anon)? If so, why were they successful or unsuccessful previously? If not involved previously, how will family involvement be used as part of this patient’s recovery efforts? Identify 2 factors that may impede or facilitate recovery from substance abuse and addiction (e.g., social support network) and explain how those factors relate specifically to your patient’s situation As part of discharge planning activities:

a) What resources do they currently have available to them when they leave treatment?

b) What resources do they need when they leave treatment that are not currently available to them? Explain why these are needed based on the discharge criteria we discussed earlier in the COUN 8202 Course As part of aftercare planning activities:

a) What resources do they currently have available to them when they leave treatment?

b) What resources do they need when they leave treatment that are not currently available to them? Explain why these are needed based on our discussions about relapse prevention earlier in the COUN 8202 Course Describe 2 possible barriers/obstacles that may prevent successful implementation of either discharge or aftercare plans When preparing this client for relapse prevention activities:

a) Which 3 high risk situations should be included as part of their relapse prevention plan? Explain why those were chosen over other potential high risk situations b) Which 4 coping strategies would be included as part of their relapse prevention plan for managing these high risk situations? Explain why those were chosen over other potential coping strategies Based on everything we know about addiction at this point, what 2 things do we still need more research on in order to further our knowledge about addiction and provide better care for clients suffering from substance abuse disorders In general terms, what type(s) of research designs would help us gain knowledge about these two areas above Outline at least one study design related specifically to one (or both) areas listed above that could help us gain more knowledge about addiction Identify 1 primary limitation associated with this study design identify 2 possible ways we might overcome such limitations Finally, imagine it is 5 years later – has anything changed since starting treatment with regard to any aspect related specifically to either discharge planning or aftercare planning activities for your patient Now imagine it is 10 years later – has anything changed since starting treatment with regard to any aspect related specifically to either discharge planning or aftercare planning activities for your patient

COUN 8202 Week 11 Discussion 2 (20 Questions)

I. For a given patient with an addiction, what factors would you use to determine the level of care?

There are many factors to consider when determining the level of care for a patient with an addiction. Some of these factors include:

1. The severity of the addiction: This is typically measured by how much the person is using, how often they are using, and how long they have been using. More severe addictions will require more intensive levels of care.

2. The presence of co-occurring mental health disorders: Patients with co-occurring disorders will typically require higher levels of care than those without.

3. The patient’s social support system: A strong social support system can be helpful in keeping patients engaged in treatment and helping them to stay sober. Patients with weaker social support systems may require more intensive levels of care.

4. The patient’s motivation to change: Patients who are more motivated to change their behavior and get sober are more likely to succeed in treatment than those who are not as motivated.

5. The patient’s ability to comply with treatment: Patients who are able to comply with treatment requirements (e.g., attending therapy sessions, taking medication as prescribed) are more likely to succeed in treatment than those who cannot comply.

COUN 8202 Week 12 Assignment (20 Questions)

*Note: COUN 8202 Course is a prerequisite for COUN 8203, which must be taken concurrently. The assignment for COUN 8202 is due on Sunday at midnight of Week 12 and the assignment for COUN 8203 is due on Sunday at midnight of Week 13.*

1. What are three of the most important things that you have learned in COUN 8202 Course?

– Theories help to explain why people might develop addiction and can guide treatment
– There are different types of addiction treatment available, and what might work for one person might not work for another
– Case management is an important part of addiction treatment, as it can help to connect people to resources and support

2. Describe how the disease model of addiction can be helpful in understanding and treating addiction.

The disease model of addiction can be helpful in understanding and treating addiction by providing a framework for why people might develop addiction and how it can be treated. The disease model posits that addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite negative consequences. This model can be helpful in understanding why someone with an addiction might continue to use drugs even when it is causing them harm, and it can also guide treatment. For example, the disease model would emphasize the need for medical detoxification and long-term follow-up care to reduce the risk of relapse.

3. Explain how the biopsychosocial model of addiction can be helpful in understanding and treating addiction.

The biopsychosocial model of addiction can be helpful in understanding and treating addiction by providing a framework for how biological, psychological, and social factors can all contribute to the development of addiction. This model emphasizes that there is not just one cause of addiction, but rather that it is caused by a combination of factors. This model can be helpful in understanding why someone with an addiction might continue to use drugs even when it is causing them harm, and it can also guide treatment. For example, the biopsychosocial model would emphasize the need for medical detoxification, psychological counseling, and social support to reduce the risk of relapse.

4. Describe three different types of treatment for addiction.

Three different types of treatment for addiction are medical detoxification, psychological counseling, and social support. Medical detoxification helps to physically remove the addictive substance from the body and can be done in a hospital or residential setting. Psychological counseling helps to address the underlying psychological causes of addiction and can be done in individual or group settings. Social support helps to provide resources and support for people with addiction and can be done through peer support groups or family therapy.

5. Explain how case management can be helpful in treating addiction.

Case management can be helpful in treating addiction by connecting people with resources and support. Case managers work with people with addiction to connect them with resources such as housing, food, transportation, and medical care. They also provide emotional support and connect people with treatment options. Case management can be helpful in reducing the risk of relapse by making sure that people with addiction have access to all the resources they need to recover.
