Instructions:
The purpose of the Practicum Journal is to provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your weekly activities, in relation to your professional development. Your journal will be submitted at the end of each week, but you are encouraged to keep it up-to-date so that you can gain a better understanding of your thoughts and feelings about your experiences as they occur. You may wish to refer back to your journal for feedback during your next practicum placement or in future COUN 8146 Courses.
You are required to maintain a journal throughout your practicum placement. The journal should contain daily entries for each day of the week, excluding weekends and holidays.
As per the expectations set forth by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), your journal must be kept confidential. It is therefore essential that you do not include any information which could identify clients or agencies in any way, including personal names, names of agencies, locations, or identifying characteristics such as gender, age or occupation. These confidentiality requirements extend also to clients’ families, co-workers and other service providers within the agency/community as well as any supervisors, colleagues or peers who may have information about these clients.
If this would result in an entry being completely blank for a day, simply note that no client contact was made on that day (e.g., “No client contact today due to the holiday”). When writing about clients it is expected that you will not use pseudonyms in order to protect client confidentiality – rather this means that you should write about them without reference to their identity (e.g., “Today I saw a client who said…”). If reference has been made at some point during the session then it should also be made in the journal (e.g., if during a session with Client A a reference is made about Client B then both Client A and B would need to be referenced by name within the journal entry).
In addition to recording events from each day which relate specifically to work with clients (e.g., types of interventions used; stages of treatment; issues discussed; etc.), there are several other aspects of your experience which may contribute significantly towards developing a greater understanding of yourself as a professional counsellor/psychotherapist and these must also be included within your journal entries:

This assessment has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills related to crisis management. You will be asked to review a scenario and develop an intervention plan for each of the three phases of crisis (pre-crisis, crisis, and post-crisis). In addition, you will identify how each phase is addressed in the intervention plan and how this plan reflects an understanding of development across the lifespan. Your intervention plan should include a minimum of three interventions for each phase. In addition, your assessment must address diversity factors for at least one individual in the case.
Scenario:
You are working as a school counselor at a local high school. Recently, one of your students, Sarah, was involved in a serious car accident that left her with significant injuries. Sarah is currently hospitalized and is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks. Her parents have been by her side since the accident occurred and are extremely worried about her condition. Sarah’s friends have also been very supportive, visiting her in the hospital on a regular basis.
During your last meeting with Sarah’s parents, they expressed their concern that Sarah may be experiencing some sort of mental health crisis as a result of the accident. They are worried that she may be suicidal or may attempt to harm herself in some way. They have asked you to develop an intervention plan to help Sarah during this difficult time.
In your response, address the following:
1. Develop an intervention plan for Sarah that includes a minimum of three interventions for each phase of crisis (pre-crisis, crisis, and post-crisis). Be sure to address how each phase is addressed in the intervention plan and how this plan reflects an understanding of development across the lifespan.
2. Identify how diversity factors will be considered in the intervention plan. Be sure to address at least one individual in the case.

1) Define crisis intervention theory as it relates to mental health crisis intervention? How does it differ from other theories? (minimum 150 words)
Crisis intervention theory is a psychological theory that deals with how people react to and cope with crisis situations. The theory was first developed in the 1970s by psychologists Robert Jay Lifton and John Hagan, who proposed that people go through three stages of crisis: 1) an initial stage of shock and disbelief, 2) a second stage of confusion and anxiety, and 3) a third stage of resolution in which they attempt to make sense of what has happened and find ways to cope with it. The theory has since been expanded upon by other psychologists and researchers, who have proposed different models and approaches to crisis intervention.
The main difference between crisis intervention theory and other psychological theories is its focus on how people react to and cope with crisis situations. Other theories may focus on different aspects of human behavior, such as personality development or psychopathology. However, crisis intervention theory can be applied to any type of crisis situation, whether it be personal, interpersonal, or societal in nature.
2) Discuss three interventions that could be used when working with a client in a mental health crisis? (minimum 150 words)
There are many different interventions that can be used when working with someone in a mental health crisis. It is important to tailor the interventions to the individual client’s needs and preferences, as well as the specific situation they are in.
One type of intervention that can be used is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT can help clients to identify negative thoughts and beliefs that may be contributing to their distress, and then work on changing these thoughts and beliefs. CBT has been shown to be effective for a variety of mental health problems, including anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse disorders.
Another type of intervention that can be used is problem-solving therapy (PST). PST helps clients to identify specific problems that are causing them distress, brainstorm possible solutions to these problems, and then implement these solutions. PST has been shown to be effective for treating depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and other mental health problems.
Finally, psychoeducation can also be helpful for people in a mental health crisis. Psychoeducation involves providing information about mental illness, its symptoms, its treatments, and how to cope with it. This information can help people understand their illness better and feel more empowered to manage their symptoms effectively.

COUN 8146 Course Week 12 Assessment & Grading
Assessment
In this assessment, you will examine how to assess crisis and trauma. You will also explore how different assessment tools can be used with clients of various ages, genders, cultures, and developmental stages. In addition, you will analyze the importance of multidisciplinary assessments in a crisis or trauma situation. You will utilize what you have learned about assessments to create a plan for assessing children who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.
To prepare for this assessment:
• Read Chapter 4 in your COUN 8146 Course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies (7th ed.). Focus on the following topics: Assessment in Crisis Counseling, Multidisciplinary Assessments of Children in Crisis, Developmental Perspectives on Childhood Trauma Assessment, and Gender Issues in Crisis Assessment. • Review the resources provided in this week’s Resources under “Psychological First Aid—Resources for Children” and “Learning Activity Resources—Assessment Tools” for additional information about conducting assessments with children and adolescents following a disaster. • Review this week’s Learning Activity: Learning Activity 1: Assessing Individual Client Needs following a Disaster or Trauma. • Research the following assessments using the Argosy University Online Library and any other resources you deem necessary to inform your analysis: The Impact Event Scale-13 (IES-13) The Prevalence of Psychiatric Disorders Among Victims of Disasters (ADAPTS) Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) The Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (BSI-18) • Consider how these assessments might be used with children who have experienced a disaster like Hurricane Katrina. Which assessments would be most appropriate? Why? What information would they provide? Be sure to consider the age, gender, cultural background, and developmental stage of the child when making your decisions about which assessments are appropriate. • Review this week’s Learning Activities on Hurricane Katrina as well as any other resources provided by your instructor this week that discuss Hurricane Katrina. Consider the following questions while reviewing these resources: Where were some of the children who were displaced located following Hurricane Katrina? How were they housed? What type of trauma did they experience due to Hurricane Katrina? What is known about their mental health status since then? How many years ago did Hurricane Katrina occur? Has much time passed since then? Would some of these assessments be appropriate for use with children whose parents are still dealing with long-term effects from Hurricane Katrina even though it has been several years since it occurred? Why or why not? How might information gathered from these assessments help counselors working with families affected by long-term effects from Hurricane Katrina?
