COUN 8135 Course is designed to prepare students for clinical supervision. The material will be presented as an extension of the theoretical and practical issues discussed in previous counseling classes. Students will explore the supervisory relationship with particular attention to issues of power, authority, transference/counter-transference, counter-resistance and developmental tasks of supervisees at different levels of professional development. Other areas explored include the supervisor’s role in assessment and treatment planning, ethical issues, diversity and multicultural considerations. Students will also examine their own supervisory style and preferences in order to become more aware of their own strengths and limitations as supervisors. Practical experiences including counseling demonstrations, observation of supervision sessions conducted by other students and faculty member(s) are included as a way to enhance learning.

COUN 8135 Course Description: COUN 8135 Course is designed to prepare students for the role of clinical supervisor in a variety of settings. Supervision theory, research and practice will be explored, with a focus on developing the skills necessary to provide quality supervision. The importance of ethical and legal standards in clinical supervision will be addressed. Issues related to gender, ethnicity, cultural differences and special populations will also be discussed. Prerequisites: COUN 8120 or COUN 8220 or permission of instructor

The Clinical Supervision COUN 8135 Course will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face and online delivery. Face-to-Face: There will be two face to face sessions in the first week of each semester (see dates below). These sessions will cover all required information for professional supervision practice in Australia, including ethical, legal and organisational considerations. Practical skills sessions will also be included in these two face to face sessions. Online: In order to build on the learning in the two face to face days and provide an opportunity for further development of clinical supervision skills, students will participate in weekly discussion forums. COUN 8135 Course is designed to provide a capstone experience for graduates in the MSSW Program. Students will have opportunities to apply their knowledge of social work supervision and practice in an agency setting under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). The COUN 8135 Course includes individual and group supervision, as well as some didactic sessions with other students on issues related to clinical supervision and practice.

Clinical Supervision is a three-credit, graduate-level COUN 8135 Course that meets the requirements of the Kansas Board of Behavioral Sciences for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). It is also required for Master’s level students seeking Licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Kansas. The purpose of COUN 8135 Course is to teach the skills necessary for effective clinical supervision. This will include learning how to develop and practice skills associated with setting limits and expectations, facilitating growth and development, functioning within supervisory relationships, managing conflict, providing feedback, evaluating the supervisee’s performance, and promoting professional identity. COUN 8191 – Independent Study Project (1 credits) (COUN 8191) This one credit independent study allows students to pursue a topic related to their professional interests or educational goals. Students may want to use independent study to: 1) complete an internship that cannot be accommodated in any other way; 2) complete special projects related to a student’s interests; 3) explore new ideas and methods for teaching; 4) expand one’s educational experience by pursuing studies outside of their area; 5) strengthen current areas of study; 6) conduct research on topics not included in standard curriculum offerings; 7) conduct research on subjects not covered sufficiently by regular curriculum offerings; 8) apply knowledge gained from regular curriculum offerings outside the classroom by putting it into practice.

COUN 8220 – Theory & Practice Couples Counseling (3 credits) (COUN 8220) In this class students will learn about different theories and ways in which couples can be helped. Students will gain an understanding of common couple problems that result in distress during critical life transitions such as marriage or parenting. Topics also include understanding how communication patterns are developed early in relationships and how they affect how couples interact with each other throughout their lives together. Students will learn practical intervention strategies based on evidence based practices that can help couples enhance communication skills while developing stronger relationships. Students will also learn how personal attitudes toward marriage can influence the ability to effectively work with couples who are experiencing distress during these critical life transitions. COUN 8330 – Grief Counseling (3 credits) (COUN 8330) Grief counseling provides counseling professionals with opportunities for developing specialized skills pertaining to grief counseling. Although grief counseling is often viewed from a crisis perspective involving highly emotional reactions that may threaten our physical well-being due to profound sorrow resulting from loss or change—we need to remember that grief is universal experience that affects everyone at some point during their lifespan –which means grief is natural! Therefore when someone experiences an overwhelming sense of sadness—it is a signal that something has been lost or changed—and although this experience may cause us significant emotional pain—it is not necessarily evidence of mental illness! COUN 8135 Course Schedule Details: COUN 8135 Course DESCRIPTION In COUN 8135 Course, students will expand their knowledge and application of consultation skills, theory, process, and applications to leadership and management practices. Emphasis is placed on professional accountability and responsibility through the development of individual practice management skills that include professional identity and work/life balance. Students will develop an understanding of the ethical implications of consultation in various school settings. In addition, students will gain insight into the challenges related to school counseling programs in a variety of educational settings including K-12 public schools. COUN 8135 Course OBJECTIVES Define consultation in school counseling according to ASCA National Standards for School Counseling Programs (2010).
